Two nights at Landmannalaugar

Use it as a base rather than a quick stop: arrive safely, take one weather-appropriate hike, soak, then use the full middle day for the best route conditions allow.

Separate action required

Camping does not replace parking.

For 2026, reserve parking for your 25 July arrival if it is between 09:00 and 16:00. Add the Hilux registration plate when you collect it.

Recommended approach

F26 → F208 → F224

The northern route is the easiest approach and has fewer river crossings. F224 covers the final 2.5 km. Check the exact roads immediately before departure.

Final river decision

P1 is the safe default.

Two rivers sit immediately before the main area. Park at P1 before them and use the pedestrian bridge if depth, current, weather or confidence is doubtful.

At the campsite

What is actually there.

A remote highland campsite—not a serviced holiday park.

Toilets + paid showers

The large toilet and shower building also serves campers and day visitors.

Bring your own cooking kit

Campers may use the common eating/cooking shelter but not the hut kitchen. Bring stove, utensils and food.

Drinking water

Campers have access to bathrooms and drinking water, plus outdoor tables and benches.

Exposed ground

The camping ground is mostly gravel and exposed to wind. Secure everything before leaving the camper.

Natural hot spring

Use the wooden path across the bog. Bring swimwear, towel and warm layers for the walk back. No soap and no glass in or around the bathing stream.

Choose after checking weather

Useful hikes from camp.

Distances and times are from the Iceland Touring Association. Wind and visibility matter more than the plan.

Best easy option

Laugahraun Lava Field Circle

4.8 km1½–2 hr

A compact loop through the lava field. The sensible choice for arrival day or uncertain weather.

Colourful mountain

Brennisteinsalda

+3.4 kmAllow extra time

The Sulphur Wave is an extension of the Laugahraun circuit, with geothermal terrain and colourful rhyolite views.

Challenging

Bláhnúkur · Blue Peak

Steep summitAbout 4 hr

The strongest panorama, but exposed and steep. Choose it only with good visibility and manageable wind.

Longer day

Ljótipollur

13 km4–6 hr

A longer hike to a red-walled explosion crater lake. Carry food, water and layers.

Full-day route

Skallahringur

15.5 km6–8 hr

The biggest local loop in this guide. Start only with a stable forecast and enough daylight and energy.

Simple two-night rhythm

Do not force the summit.
